Argentine writer Carlos Busqued died on March 29, 2021 at the age of 50. His second novel Magnetized was published in English translation last year, having followed the translation of his debut Under This Terrible Sun in 2013. I reviewed both of the books in B O D Y and we published an excerpt of his debut as well.
It is a terrible loss. He wasn’t only a great and entertaining writer who managed to explore challenging, difficult, disturbing and necessary subjects Argentine, Latin American and universal, but did so with a wicked sense of humor and thorough sensitivity. He also managed to write and choose his subjects in a way that his books could be about familiar topics or feature seemingly familiar characters yet feel entirely unfamiliar while reading them, which is what good writing is supposed to achieve. If you haven’t read his books, read them.
