About

Literalab got its start in December 2010 as a blog written by Michael Stein for the Prague-based magazine he then worked for. Now cast off into the world together the blog and its blogger appear here in a new format – offering news, book reviews, interviews and assorted essays from the occasionally absurd but always stimulating Central and Eastern European world of writing.

Michael Stein is a writer and journalist based in the Czech Republic and has published short stories and journalism with a number of European and American magazines. He runs a website on Central European writing called Literalab and has written for literary journals such as Asymptote and the The Review of Contemporary Fiction. He is an editor at the Prague-based journal B O D Y and runs the Saturday European Fiction series. His own fiction has been published in The Missing Slate and McSweeney’s among other magazines.

I really enjoy all of your posts. Even though the NYRB is doing a good job with publishing books in translation of central/eastern European writers, the literary world in the States is definitely deficient in novels from this part of the world. Thank you again for sharing all of this information on your blog!

I read your article about Burkhart List’s search for lost art in a cave on Germany. That was a year ago. I can’t find any information about the search. Did it take place? Did they find anything? Thanks.
