On Sept 29 there will be a panel presenting and discussing two works of Slovak fiction that besides being outstanding writing are unfortunately very timely. The Last Thing by Leopold Lahola and The Hours and The Minutes by Alfonz Bednár translated by Julia and Peter Sherwood and David Short respectively, are both collections of short stories/novellas that range from the prewar rise of Slovak fascism, through the war and partisan uprising and into the aftermath of the war and Holocaust and the rise of communist oppression. I edited both translations, so I know what I’m talking about.
The event will take place at Hatchards Piccadilly, London with a panel that includes translator Julia Sherwood, literary scholar Tim Beasley-Murray and my friend and Karolinum Press colleague Jan Zikmund.
