The Belarus blacklist

The Belarus blacklist

The cultural and media blacklist that the government of Belarus has denied exists and which Russian writer Victor Erofeyev recently referred to being on, seems to be having a growing influence according to this article in Transitions Online. Rock concerts have been cancelled due to imaginary illnesses and paintings by artists such as Ales Marachkin have been pulled from exhibitions.

“The authorities’ confrontation with artists and society, injustice, makes me more active as an artist,” Marachkin said in the article. “I can’t sit on the couch and observe what’s going on indifferently. I’ve got to think and act.”

The list also reportedly includes all the international celebrities that have spoken out in favor of the Belarus Free Theatre, including Jude Law, Kevin Spacey and Tom Stoppard.
