Gabriela Adameşteanu in New York

Romanian novelist and journalist Gabriela Adameşteanu’s best known novel Wasted Mornings (Dimineata pierduta) was a huge critical and commercial success when it was first published in Romania in 1984 and numerous translations followed. The English translation by Patrick Camiller was published this year by Northwestern University Press and on November 3 Adameşteanu will be appearing at the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York as part of the European Book Club to read from and discuss her work.

On the Contemporary Romanian Writers website you can find a lot more information about Adameşteanu as well as presentations and excerpts from her as yet untranslated novels, such as the nicely titled The Identical Journey of Every Day or the Kundera-like The Encounter, in which a Romanian exile agrees to visit his former country though it is still under Ceauşescu’s rule in the 80s.
