There are only a few days left to apply for this year’s Sozopol Fiction Seminars that will take place on the Black Sea coastal town of Sozopol from June 18-22. The application deadline is March 20.
The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation’s program offers full scholarships for 10 writers to come to Bulgaria – five English-speaking, five Bulgarian – and work with a very impressive lineup of faculty members and a great lineup of events, including a literary festival back in Sofia after the workshop. I was a guest last year – there are also a number of magazine editors who attend the program – and it was amazing.
This year’s faculty includes Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian and The Swan Thieves; Georgi Gospodinov, author of Natural Novel and The Physics of Sorrow, which is forthcoming in English from Open Letter Books in April; guest lecturers Claire Messud, author of many books, but most recently The Woman Upstairs; as well as Hristo Karastoyanov, author of Autopia: The Other Road to Hell and The Spider, among other books.
If you have a great 20 page writing sample, can write a statement of purpose and get a letter of recommendation then apply, it’s worth a shot.
