More on Prague’s German-language writers upcoming on literalab and elsewhere, including reviews of recently published novels and novellas by Franz Werfel, a biography of Gustav Meyrink and on the fantastic fiction of Leo Perutz.
I just left a coment on Readux after reading your article. very interesting. Our next German Literature Month is upcoming this November, I might have to quote you as I’d like to do a post on German writers from Prague. Unfortunately not that many have been translated.
Thanks, Caroline. I’ll be writing more about them soon though the lack of translations is a problem. It would be good to make a case for some that would be obvious cases to be translated into English.
for some reason I couldn’t reply on Readux, so here goes:
You’re right, at least as far as I can tell, no Reinerova is available in English. Actually a lot of Perutz’s novels have been translated into English (8 or 9) but are out of print, which is insane because they are so good. You can still find some titles in used book stores in the US (I check out of habit, though I have them all). He especially deserves a reassessment because Borges’ love of his work means much more than some of the clueless, condescending dismissals and general indifference among English-language readers. There are also a lot who have been translated and published – Paul Leppin (3 books by Twisted Spoon Press) and H.G. Adler, who I haven’t read but looks fascinating (though challenging).
Thanks for your answer. Would you maybe consider a guest post for German Literature Month. It would be great. It could be the same post, maybe shorter with some information about the translation situation? If not, that’s quite ok, I’ll just do something and mention you. If yes, could you send me a mail?
