Magnesia Litera 2019

The biggest Czech literary awards were given out last night and the Book of the Year went to Radka Denemarková for Hodiny z olova. Best Prose went to the prolific and inimitable Pavla Horáková for Teorie podivnosti (A Theory of Strangeness) while Discovery of the Year went to Probudím se na Šibuji (I Wake Up in Shibuya) by Anna Cima.

Read and hear more about the awards and Pavla Horáková at Radio Prague here

Read an excerpt from I Wake Up in Shibuya by Anna Cima, translated by Julia Sherwood on Czech Literature Online

And read about all the other categories (in Czech) at the awards website here (if you can’t understand it just learn Czech, it’s really easy!)

There will be more excerpts published in English forthcoming in B O D Y and elsewhere. Keep your eyes peeled.
